Police arrested a man who was allegedly waving a knife and threatening to harm passengers on a Winnipeg Transit bus Monday.

Police were called at about 6 p.m., and the bus stopped in the area of Portage Avenue and Vaughan Street.

“The male, who displayed signs of intoxication, was taken into custody, and the knife was seized. Nobody was injured or wished to pursue further police involvement once the threat was removed,” the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Tuesday.

A 32-year-old man was charged with possession of a weapon and two counts of failing to comply with conditions of a release order. He was detained in custody.

The incident was one of several involving knives or hatchets that city police dealt with Monday and early Tuesday.

Officers were sent to the 200 block of Weitzel Street in Tyndall Park about a man damaging a vehicle with a hatchet at about 2:30 a.m. Monday.

Police arrested a 22-year-old man. The victim told police he doesn’t know the suspect, who is facing charges of possession of a weapon and mischief under $5,000.

Shortly after, at about 2:45 a.m., officers were sent to the 100 block of Henry Avenue regarding a woman acting erratically, waving a knife around people and smashing a window.

Police said the 24-year-old suspect had a knife and methamphetamine on her. She is facing charges of possession of a weapon, mischief under $5,000 and possession of methamphetamine.

Officers also arrested two males for possessing knives in unrelated incidents. Cadets were patrolling in the area of Hargrave Street and Ellice Avenue when they saw people drinking in public at about 10:45 p.m. Monday. The people in the group ran off, except for a man who allegedly tried to hide the liquor and showed signs of being intoxicated. A knife was found within his waistband, the WPS said.

The 24-year-old man was turned over to police and charged with carrying a concealed weapon and failing to comply with conditions of a release order.

Early Tuesday, patrolling officers spotted a teenage boy they believed was under curfew conditions standing outside an establishment on the 200 block of Maryland Street. He was arrested, and police allegedly found a knife in his pants.

A 14-year-old boy remains in custody and is facing charges of possession of a weapon and three counts of failing to comply with conditions of a release order.
