A 27-year-old Winnipeg man is facing a slew of charges after allegedly leading police on a dramatic chase through Neepawa.
RCMP said Saturday the suspect had been charged with impaired driving, flight from police, assaulting a police officer and a litany of other offences stemming from the Friday morning incident.
At about 11 a.m. Friday, RCMP were called about a possible impaired driver who had allegedly stolen fuel from a gas station in Gladstone, about 150 km northwest of Winnipeg.
The suspect, driving a white SUV police later determined was stolen, was driving westbound towards Neepawa on Highway 16 when officers tried to stop him. The driver collided with a police cruiser and continued driving. Police say a Mountie made a second attempt at arresting the man and was dragged by the driver. RCMP say the officer shot his gun at the driver and was able to free himself.
RCMP originally released the suspect was from Fort McMurray, Alta., but clarified Saturday he was from Winnipeg. The suspect wasn’t hit by the officer’s shots, and the Mountie who was dragged suffered minor injuries, Manitoba RCMP said in a news release.
The news release didn’t say how many shots were fired, where the collision and shooting took place or where the vehicle was stolen from.
The man was located and arrested in another area, the police statement concludes.
Alan Gillies witnessed some of the affair first-hand. The Neepawa resident was driving east on Main Street, the portion of Highway 16 that runs through Neepawa, when he saw the SUV being followed by two RCMP cruisers with lights flashing, headed in the opposite direction.
Neepawa is located about 37 kilometres west of Gladstone.
Gillies said he figures they were travelling about 80 km/h. The town’s speed limit is 50 km/h.
“(The) first thing I saw was the RCMP lights, and then I noticed the (SUV) directly in front that wasn’t pulling over as one would normally do,” Gillies told the Brandon Sun.
Neepawa, a town of about 3,600, is located about 187 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg.
Jesse E. Young of Winnipeg has been has remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in Brandon court Monday morning.
